Okay, so this year’s commercials were pretty underwhelming overall. However, there were a number of movies that I am really excited about that had commercials.

#1: Transformers: Dark of the Moon – I’ll start with the movie that I am most excited to see. I will make no apologies for being a fan of Transformers. I will probably always be excited for another Transformers movie. This commercial didn’t have any dialogue, but showed a lot of action and an entire city under siege. I saw someone comment that it looked like “more of the same story” from the first two movies. Technically not true. A battle in the city was done in the first film, but that was to get the cube. The second one had a villain trying to destroy the sun. This one seems to feature a Decepticon invasion. Of course all of them have the same purpose, because the Decepticons have only one goal: victory.

#2: Super 8 – J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg have created what I hope is the start of a return to the Amblin style of film-making. I love this kind of movie, and can’t wait to see it.

#3: Cowboys & Aliens – Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford in a film directed by Jon Favreau, director of Iron Man 1 and 2. I was skeptical myself until I watched the full trailer. This commercial just solidifies it in my mind. It looks like it’ll be one of the most fun movies this summer.

#4 and 5: Thor and Captain America – I have to write about these together, because I’m looking forward to both equally as much, so this is pretty much a tie. I loved the epic feel of the Thor commercial, but the Captain America trailer seemed lacking next to it. However, the Captain America trailer did manage to tell the entire origin of Cap within 30 seconds, and that’s definitely something. Plus, it serves as a great introduction to the character.

#6: Terra Nova – This is the next tv series that I am looking forward to. This could be my next Lost or Heroes. It’s definitely got the pull, for me: I love dinosaurs. The commercial aired just after the Super Bowl ended, if I am not mistaken. Either way, I’m really excited for this series to start, and hope it isn’t a let down.

#7 – Volkswagon Commercial: The Force – This isn’t a movie, but it is based on one of my favorite properties: Star Wars.

#8 – Coca-Cola: Siege – This commercial was awesome, and great to watch without knowing what product it was for until about half way though. Unfortunately that isn’t possible with the title right in the video box. It’s an epic commercial that tells a story pretty quickly.

#9 – Doritos: House Sitting – This commercial started with a very simple concept, and just kept escalating the story. It was very unexpected and goes where you don’t expect.

#10 – CareerBuilder: Parking Lot – This one was funny. It’s not terribly memorable, nor does it say anything about the company that it is advertising, but many commercials on the Super Bowl are more about getting good laughs and viral marketing after the game, than they are about explaining the company.

Missing the top-ten list: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Why? Because when the commercial was on, I felt it was the exact same thing as I’d seen before with the full theatrical trailer. If they include Jack Sparrow’s scream in every trailer, it’s going to kill it in the movie, if it hasn’t already.

And there you have it, my favorite ten Super Bowl commercials. I hope that you enjoyed them as much as I did. I’ll be back to writing new original stories soon.

Abrams would do a great job with it, though two of his writers were the primary writers of Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

The third film is written by the third part of the writing team from the second film. Alone. So who knows… Michael Bay fills us in on both the feel of the script for the third film, as well as his work to help out Haiti:

Hello everyone,

Busy scouting – Chicago, Detroit, and Washington D.C. for Transformers last week. Things are going well. The script is feeling very different from the other two. I ended my scout down in Miami this weekend to load my plane with 14 Florida Surgeons, specialists in various fields and flew them down to Haiti. We then returned with a planeload of a team of exhausted Miami Fire rescue. It is proving very difficult for these volunteers to get back home.

They say the news hardly gives the true scope of what really happened. They really feel about 500,000 probably died. One of the worst stories I heard from people down there – because of the huge lack of education in Haiti – when the earthquake struck – everyone ran inside buildings most likely to their graves. The state of Florida is really pulling their weight in this massive effort.

Michael

So, he’s scouted for locations in Chicago, Detroit and Washington D.C. Nice. I live about 3 1/2 hours from both Chicago and Detroit, so even though I don’t think I’ll have time, I’d love to try to be an extra in the film, if he settles on it. He did shoot in Detroit on the first film, and I think Washington D.C. Not sure about Chicago, though.

One thing that I really loved about it, though: “The script is feeling very different from the other two.” I hope this is different in a positive direction. For example: focus more on the robots. It’s called “Transformers.” Not “Humans, with special guests, the Transformers!” I have heard that they’re cutting it back to a movie about a boy and his robot, which is fine with me, so long as Bumblebee can speak this time around. I’m also hoping that they take the time to actually build up the Autobot characters as well as the Decepticons.

I’d also appreciate a less vulgar film than the second one. It’s based on toys for kids, it should be MARKETABLE toward kids. A film that full of innuendo, cursing and all that is not.

I have to hand it to Michael Bay for helping with Haiti, though, regardless of his sense of humor and swearing habits.

You can see pictures from Michael Bay’s trip on his blog.

I still need to decompress what I’ve just witnessed. While I don’t appreciate, or approve of, Michael Bay’s sense of humor, I do think he finally got something right: he let the Transformers hold actual conversations with each other. The Autobots spoke more, and the Decepticons definitely spoke a lot more this time around.

I would shave a bit off of the beginning of the movie. Anyone that’s seen it will probably agree: the Pretender, and the first conversation between Sam and Mikaela weren’t really necessary.

Anyway, there are a lot of things that I would like to say about the movie, but I want to bring up something I wrote in 2007: My wishlist for Transformers 2.

Okay. Here’s what my ideal storyline for the next Transformers film would entail.

Transformers 2

A huge spaceship called the Ark is headed for Earth. On board are many of the remaining Autobots, answering the call of Optimus Prime. Close behind, Starscream is on-board a Decepticon ship, filled with Decepticons such as Soundwave, among others. As the Ark approaches Earth, the Decepticons damage the ship and it crash lands on the side of a volcanic mountain in a desert region of the United States.

The Decepticons are under the “leadership” of Starscream, returning to Earth to seek revenge. However, Soundwave double crosses Starscream, and finds a way to bring the ship into the Ocean, where Megatron awaits. It is there, under the water, that the Decepticons build a base of operations.

Sam and Mikaela start out the movie having married between films. That takes care of any possibility of a Will Turner/Elizabeth Swann type love story, plus it takes out the “will they/won’t they” and leaves room for more of what we’re all there to see anyway: TRANSFORMERS.

Meanwhile, Optimus leads the Autobots to the crash site of the downed Ark where they form a headquarters.

In the desert lives a boy that already feels like he’s been outcast from society. People look at him differently. Living in the desert, he’s become great with computers, and wishes he could live a “normal” life. His name is Chip Chase, a young computer genius that is confined to a wheelchair. When one of the Autobots is in trouble near by, he is able to come to their aide, and eventually comes to help them out at their base. No longer the outcast, he is one of many that people now admire, the perfect teammate for the Autobots. (In the original animated series, Prowl’s “battle computer” is damaged in a fight with Decepticons. He then goes online to seek help from the Autobots or from Teletran 1, the computer system in the Ark. He, instead, communicates with Chip, who gives him a hand.)

Without the All-Spark Cube, the Decepticons have a new goal: Energon. They’ll take it from wherever they can. And the Autobots have to stop them from getting too much of it, or they’ll be able to construct a new All-Spark Cube.

Thus ends my idea’s for Transformers 2, so far.

I wanted to also fit the Dinobots in, but this is already pretty full, so perhaps Transformers 3.

Anyway, that’s a bit of what I think the sequel should have. I think the story should now be more from the robots’ perspectives.. we’ve gotten the movie that introduces them, now we’re primed and ready for a movie that focuses on them almost entirely.

So, how much of the story did I get right? Well, about half.

More Autobots DID come to Earth, but not in the ARK. Though the Autobots did have a base with the military. Soundwave does appear, but is under-used, and not quite the same as I had hoped he would be. Starscream did, pretty much, what I thought. He brought more Decepticons. They also brought back Megatron, but their base was stationed in space, with The Fallen.

Chip didn’t appear, which I figured, but the Decepticons were now after Energon. That was a cool call-back to the old cartoon, but they didn’t really use it in the same way. Instead, they made it come from stars, making the whole world involved in the battle.

Anyway, there was a lot that happened in this movie, and I’m planning on seeing it a few more times, for sure. It might not be five times, like I saw the first one, but I’m hoping that after time the story of the movie becomes more clear to me.

One other thing that I’d like to point out, however, as a side note that I really loved about the movie, was in it’s reference to God, when a character says “I’ve we were made in God’s image, who’s image were they made in” or something like that. I appreciated that, thoroughly.

Next, after having seen the film again, I’ll be writing my own outline for what I think should happen in Transformers 3. Although it’ll be slightly more difficult, I think.

This month features my choice for my potential favorite film of the year. With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hitting on the 24th, it’s the date that I am looking forward to the most. Land of the Lost also launches this month, but it’s only a side trip on the way toward the biggest movie release of the year.

Land of the Lost
(June 5, 2009)

When I was young, I watched a few episodes of the tv show. Then I saw some of the newer tv series. This one is intriguing. I think that it’ll be a fun movie, and I am hoping that it’s not a disappointment. It’s kinda strange with it being so close to the release of Night at the Museum 2 and Up, but it’s about time that we get a few family friendly movies in such a short time.

I’m not the most excited about this movie, and think that it will be kind of like Night at the Museum in style and theme. The trailers make it seem like it’ll be a good movie to see one time, but that’s probably it.

One thing that I have to get past is the idea that seeing this film would be better than seeing Up for a second or even third time.

Let me just put it this way: I saw Transformers in theatres 5 times. Three times in the regular theatres and two times on IMAX. I am going to be seeing this one at least that many times, guaranteed. I’m going to say that this will be my favorite movie of the year. I don’t know of any other movie that I’m looking forward to more than this. Unless it’s Transformers 3 immediately following. Too bad that’ll probably be in 2011.

This edition is from a different DVD studio called Shout! Factory. And they’ve pulled out all of the stops on this release. Not only that, but one of the features that they list for the set makes it well worth the upgrade if you’ve already got it: Restored to the original broadcast versions with a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio.

Other features:

Triplechanger: From Toy To Comic To Screen: The Origins Of The Transformers

Printable Transport to Oblivion Script

Rare PSAs

Archival Hasbro toy commercials

Limited Edition Autobot magnet inside

The release date for this set is June 16, 2009.

I’ve just found the list of the robots that will be in the film on both sides of the war. If you don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read it. For the rest of us that could care less about who appears in it, and just would like to know, read on. I think there are some pretty great ones.

Autobots – Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Ratchet, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Arcee, Jetfire, Jolt, Skids & Mudflap (The Twins)

Decepticons – Starscream, Sideways, The Fallen, Scorponok, Soundwave, Ravage, The Doctor, Wheelie, Demolishor, Devastator (Scavenger, Scrapper, Hightower, Longhaul, Rampage, Overload, Mixmaster)

Now, I spoiled something for myself… or rather, MTV spoiled something for me. They don’t care about hiding spoilers from eyes that don’t want to see it, so the name of the freaking ARTICLE revealed the name of a robot that dies in the movie. I didn’t want to know pivotal things like that before I saw it on screen.. That’s the sort of thing that is best kept to the film experience.

There were a couple of other things in the article that caught my attention. I’m pretty excited about seeing it on IMAX now. More than I was before, because of one thing: Devastator. Michael Bay says that this is the first time anyone has done IMAX quality special effects, and they didn’t hold out when shooting a spectacular fight with Devastator, using IMAX cameras.

The other thing that caught my attention, I’m not totally thrilled about. I guess if he did this in the first movie, it was a given that he would do it again. I know that some will be happy about this, but I don’t really like it.

“[Wait until you see] the very first shot in the movie,” he replied when we asked whether Megan gets a moment as memorable as her hood-opening flirtation with Bay’s lingering camera in the first film. “You’ll see.”

“It’s better,” he said of Fox’s sexy re-introduction in the sequel. “[While filming] I was at a gas station buying ice cream bars, and these 15-year-old boys were looking at me. They were like, ‘You’re that dude that directed “Transformers”!’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah. Do you want to see “Transformers 2″? They were like, ‘Yeah!’ “

“I said, ‘Why do you want to see it?’ And together, in unison, they said, ‘The hot chick!’ ” Michael Bay laughed. “It will be a good shot for them.”

Glad that Michael Bay distanced himself from the shot and revealed his target audience for it. It really creeped me out when I was in line for Transformers on the IMAX and these two older guys were there with their sons, and they were talking about Megan Fox. It’s like, hello guys, you’re married, try to set a good example for your boys.

I still think it’s going to be my favorite movie of the summer, though.

Joining Optimus Prime’s voice actor Peter Cullen is Frank Welker. Frank Welker gave voice to Megatron and Soundwave among other characters in the original Transformers animated series. Fans have spoken up about bringing him on board and Michael Bay responded:

I think I’m going to pursue Frank on Soundwave.

Michael

A very succinct and exciting proposition. This movie just gets bigger and bigger all the time!

I figured that, since we’re getting closer to the summer movie schedule, now would be as good a time as any to post my list of movies that I anticipate seeing over the course of 2009. It’s definitely a truncated list, based on what I knew was coming out at the end of 2008. All release dates are subject to change, and additions to the list are a definite possibility.

The list of films is grouped by month. It starts out with April and goes to December. At the beginning of each month, I’ll be posting a new entry more information about each of the movies for that month, including (if available) a trailer for the film. I’ll also be expanding on my reasons for wanting to see the film, and whatever else strikes me at the time.

Earth (April 22, 2009) – This follows the story of three families: Polar Bear, Humpback Whale, and Elephant. It’s the first release from Disney’s new Disneynature imprint. The trailer used to feature the narration of Patrick Stewart, who originally narrated it for the international release in 2007, but for the U.S. release this year, James Earl Jones has re-recorded the narration. I wonder why they did that?

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1, 2009) – This is finally going to tell the full story of Wolverine, and even includes portions of the official origin story of Wolverine that was released about 8 or so years ago. It went under the title “Origin” and needed no introduction to what it was about. I have high hopes for this one, as it’s the first X-Men movie in a few years.
Terminator Salvation (May 21, 2009) – I was late to the fandom of the Terminator series, having first seen the first couple of movies just prior to seeing Terminator 3 in theatres. I really like the soundtrack, and the second two films were really interesting. Yes, I liked the third one. I thought it was a great and highly entertaining movie. So with the plan for a new trilogy, we’ll see how it goes. I’m kinda worried about this one, that it won’t be as relatable as the other films in the series. The setting of the movie being after Judgement Day puts it into a new stage of storytelling, but I don’t know if that’s going to be enough. Time will tell!
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (May 22, 2009) – I’m probably in the minority on this one, based on the response on many websites that I read, but I’m really looking forward to this film. I was surprised by the first one, and liked it a lot. This one looks like it’ll be pretty fun, but there are a few parts of the trailer that I don’t quite understand in the context of the rules set by the first film.
Up (May 29, 2009) – Pixar is brilliant, and they have yet to make a movie to completely disappoint me. The only one that I haven’t really cared for that much is A Bug’s Life, but that’s primarily because of the circus sequence and bugs. Quite literally all of the rest are nothing short of brilliant films that are both timeless and appealing to people of all ages.

Land of the Lost (June 5, 2009) – When I was young, I watched a few episodes of the tv show.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June 24, 2009) – Let me just put it this way: I saw Transformers in theatres 5 times.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (July 1, 2009) – Not sure why the Dinosaurs are appearing after the Ice Age, as far as the theoretical timeline is concerned. The second film in the series was kind of a let down, as it ended at about the same point that it started. I hope that it is better than the second one. The first one was amazing.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July 17, 2008) – This has promise, as it’s the same director as Order of the Phoenix. I have only liked every other film, from Prisoner of Azkaban on. Which means that I’ve only liked two of the Harry Potter movies so far. The fact that the same director is handling the rest, that directed the fifth, gives me hope that the series will remain dark.
G-Force (July 24, 2009) – This film is about a team of guinea pigs that do espionage. My girlfriend loves guinea pigs, so I’m going to see this with her. Nuff said.

G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra (August 7, 2009) – I was never much of a fan of G.I. Joe when I was a kid. I was more into Voltron, ThunderCats, He-Man, Transformers and The Real Ghostbusters. But I’ll give this a shot. It looked really interesting as far as the trailer was concerned, and that was enough that a lot of friends of mine were really intrigued and the talked about it a lot. It’s not the one I’m most looking forward to, but it’s the only release in August that I’m interested in at this time.
When in Rome (August 7, 2009) – I was in New York and walked through the set accidentally when they were shooting it. That’s the only reason I know anything about this movie. I don’t know if I want to see it, but I am curious to see the scene that was shot when I was there, if nothing else.
Bandslam (August 14, 2009) – Walden Media’s lone 2009 entry. I like their films, and am curious about this one.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (September 24, 2009) – The final role that Heath Ledger played before his tragic death. He only finished a quarter of it, in the end. The craziest thing about it is that the screenplay actually allowed for more than one actor to play the role that he had. Initially, he was going to continue with the character, with the character remaining the same through the whole thing. After his death, they reverted back to the original plan, with Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell stepping in to finish the film in honor of Heath Ledger. That cast and character alone is enough to intrigue me about the movie.

Toy Story (3D) (October 2, 2009) – This is an obvious choice and one that really needs no introduction. I love this movie, and seeing it in 3D is going to be incredible.
Where the Wild Things Are (October 16, 2009) – A book from my childhood that everyone seemed to love except for me. I wasn’t quite sure what to think of it when I read it and I still don’t remember it very much. I think I read it once in first or second grade. From what I understand, the movie was shot, played at a festival and was re-shot later on. I have an interest in seeing it based on that alone.

A Christmas Carol (November 6, 2009) – Nothing will ever top the Muppet Christmas Carol as the best version of the classic Dickens tale, but I’m pretty intrigued by this one. It’s the third film in Robert Zemekis’ fascination with computer animated films created with Motion Capture technology. His Polar Express was well done, but could have been a lot better, had the characters actually matched their descriptions or had expressions to match the situations. Hopefully this one is better than his boring and atrocious Beowulf.

Avatar (December 18, 2009) – James Cameron’s first film since 1997′s Titanic. It’s also his project that he’s been working on for about twenty years. Apparently it’s using technology to film the movie that’s never been used before. Cameron is a pioneer of film, inventing new techniques and breaking boundaries. There hasn’t been a single shot of footage from the movie that has been released yet, and I wish it could stay that way. I wouldn’t mind if I went into this movie completely blind to the content of it. I have a feeling that it’ll be incredible.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel (December 25, 2009) – I didn’t want to see the first one, initially, because in the original cartoon the chipmunks were about 3 feet tall. For the film, they took a more “realistic” route. Instead of 3-foot tall singing chipmunks, they used life-size singing chipmunks. Turns out that the movie wasn’t all that bad, and the sequel promises to have the Chipettes join the fray.
The Princess and the Frog (December 25, 2009) – This could be the beginning of a new golden age for Disney animation. The first hand-drawn Disney film since Home on the Range, which I did not see, looks to be a classic and a potential masterpiece. I hope that it works out for Disney Animation, and helps to kickstart a new era of greatness from Disney. It would allow them to leave the CG films to Pixar, though they did a great job with a few of their productions. Meet the Robinsons and Bolt were terrific, and showed glimpses of the return to greatness. All I know about this film is that it includes the first African American Disney Princess, she’s from New Orleans, and it’s hand-drawn. I also know the title. That’s it.
Sherlock Holmes (December 25, 2009) – I’m definitely curious about this one. I’ve really liked the Sherlock Holmes stories that I’ve heard, and I have heard some interesting things about this reboot to the series. For one thing, they’ve brought in a character that only appeared in one of the Holmes novels. For another, arch-nemesis Moriarty may not even appear in this film.

And that’s it! My full list of movies that I want to see in 2009. The only one missing from the release list is Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. There’s no solid release date yet, but it could be sometime in the Summer or Fall. Again, look for future articles each month, as the list is altered and grows or shrinks based on how certain films are shaping up, or if the release dates change. It’s going to be a really good year for film.

Well, the first images have been released for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It is due for release at the end of June, 2009. That will be two years since the first one, and I am extremely excited for it. It’s rumored to, this time, be a good fifty-fifty mix of robot-human screentime. Hopefully the third one is then 75/25 robot/human.

Anyway, today, Empire Online has released three pictures from the set. One of those features Megan Fox and Shia LeBeouf running away from danger, another features an action sequence with a van either flying through the sky, or it could be an unfinished shot with a decepticon holding onto it. The third is in Egypt, with a pyramid.

For now, it leaves me wondering if the scenes in Egypt are going to mirror the ones from the first film. They were my least favorite sequences that time around. But if it features the establishment of a base for either side, where they actually gather to form plans: that is all the better and will surprise me in a good way.

Lookin’ forward to this one!

This is one of the most exciting things that I have heard in some time. My favorite movie of 2007 was Transformers, primarily because I grew up watching Transformers. That and Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, returned to reprise his role.

The movie was fun and, every time the Transformers appeared, I was blown away. There just wasn’t enough time with the Transformers. They were only on screen for about 25% of the film, if that.

For movie 2, I created a want list for the sequel that I’ll be posting again after seeing the sequel, along with my analysis of how I feel they did, and how much they may have met my expectations or not.

Now, thanks to the inspiration of The Dark Knight, Michael Bay is joining the crowd of those that are filming sequences with IMAX cameras. These are films that deserve to be seen on IMAX, and Michael Bay is the right man for the job.

IMAX Corporation, DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures today announced that director Michael Bay will shoot key sequences of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with IMAX® cameras. Bay will integrate the IMAX footage with state of the art CGI to create an unprecedented look and feel for the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s box office hit, Transformers. As previously announced, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released to IMAX® theatres simultaneously with the movie’s wide release on June 26, 2009.

The movie sequences shot in traditional 35mm will be digitally re-mastered into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The IMAX DMR scenes will appear in the traditional “letterbox” shape, while scenes shot with IMAX’s cameras will expand vertically to fill the entire IMAX screen.

“The extraordinary level of detail and intensity captured by the IMAX camera creates many exciting possibilities for us with this film,” said Michael Bay, the film’s director. “IMAX’s all-encompassing format will take this story to a new level, and I am once again very excited to share The IMAX Experience with Transformers fans around the world.”

“The addition of another amazing title from DreamWorks and Paramount, combined with more groundbreaking use of IMAX technology by Hollywood’s top filmmakers, are examples of how far we have come as a company and a distribution platform over the past several years,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. Gelfond and Bradley J. Wechsler. “The growth of the IMAX theatre network, fueled by the economical benefits of the new IMAX digital system, is driving interest from virtually all of the top studios, which is resulting in more IMAX movies for audiences to enjoy.”

“Michael Bay’s innovative use of IMAX cameras will create a spectacular cinematic adventure for moviegoers next summer,” added Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “We’re very excited to be integrated as a core part of the Transformers production, and with the skilled marketing and distribution teams at DreamWorks and Paramount, the timing is ideal given our expanding global audience and network footprint.”

The IMAX release of this movie was previously mentioned in IMAX Corporation’s second quarter results press release on August 7.
