I highly recommend that you get a copy of it.  Rent it, buy it, and spread the word to friends that you’ve discovered the best sleeper film of 2009.

I was quite surprised to see as many features on the disc as there are.  And I was very pleased with the assortment of extras.  There’s a behind the scenes look at the making of the film with Aly Michalka and Vanessa Hudgens, as well as Deleted Scenes with introductions by the director.  There is also an Audio Commentary featuring the Director, Aly Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens and a very late arrival by Gaelan Connell.  Rounding out the extras are a pair of music videos.

I would have liked to see a few more behind the scenes features, and perhaps a mini-documentary on CBGB’s, but I’m pleased that this release actually had features.  Something that City of Ember was sorely missing.

I would have also appreciated a Blu-ray release, but with good sales for this movie, I could see that happening at some point in the future.

In the meantime, pick up a copy.  You won’t be disappointed.

The Wonder Years

Here’s a show that has many hurdles to overcome to ever be released on DVD and Blu-ray.  It is a fantastic show that deserves a great release with interviews and features galore.  The show would be an instant hit on DVD, and could potentially help to bring back some of the DVD market that has hit a slump with the current recession.  I think that the time to restore all of the footage should be taken to make the release worth owning.

The biggest problem that the series faces in ever being released is the music.  More precisely: BMI and ASCAP.  These two companies own the licensing rights to pretty much all of the music that is released by a record label.  They are in place to help artists make a fair amount whenever their songs are used in tv shows, movies, and the like.  If the companies were able to reach out to all of the artists whose music appears in the series, and were able to make deals with all of them, it would be the smartest thing for all of them.

You see, the music in the show cannot be replaced with different, cheaper, songs.  There are a lot of DVD releases with music replacements, and for the most part I haven’t noticed anything odd.  But in The Wonder Years, the lyrics speak to what is happening in the episode, and sometimes the dialogue between the characters is also reflective of that.

Right now, not a single artist involved in The Wonder Years is making any money from the series apart from anything they might be making with the show in syndication.  Neither is BMI, nor is ASCAP.  But I offer a simple solution that can make all of them a lot of money.  Make a deal, get the series released while people still remember it in larger numbers.

I know that I’m over simplifying the whole thing, but perhaps I’m not.  Perhaps the studios are simply over complicating it.  There will have to be compromise, for sure, but can’t we all agree that some money is better than no money at all?

The Wonder Years not being released on DVD or Blu-ray is bringing in money for nobody involved.  And it’s the number one most requested DVD release on the website TVshowsonDVD.com with 6,565 requests for the release.  It’s topped the list for years without any progress.

Back in 1998, there were two Wonder Years DVDs released: The Best of the Wonder Years and The Best of the Christmas Wonder Years.  There isn’t much data about the changes to the music in the Christmas release, but the other disc had most, if not all, of the music replaced with either covers of the songs, or generic music, negatively effecting the presentation.  The Best of the Wonder Years also includes only a couple of episodes, and a special highlights episode, the “Looking Back” special.

But that is not enough.  It’s been twelve years since these releases, and the DVD market is much larger than it was back in 1998.  Let’s get this show onto our shelves as soon as possible.

]]> http://www.sweetpaul.com/please-release-the-wonder-years-on-dvd-and-blu-ray-1/feed/ 23 Turles Forever: A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Team-Up Dream Come True http://www.sweetpaul.com/turles-forever-a-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-team-up-dream-come-true/ http://www.sweetpaul.com/turles-forever-a-teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-team-up-dream-come-true/#comments Tue, 02 Feb 2010 07:10:25 +0000 Paul Martin http://www.sweetpaul.com/?p=986 Turtles Forever – The mere premise of it was mind-blowing.  A feature length adventure featuring a team up of the TMNT team of the 80′s-early 90′s cartoon as well as the 90′s-early 00′s cartoon versions of the heroes.  When I first heard about it, I couldn’t believe what I was reading was actually coming.  Not only that, but I was surprised by just how soon it was going to be released!  It was originally going to receive a theatrical screening, but plans for that fell through.  Instead, it premiered on TV one Saturday morning.

There is no word of a DVD release yet, but the studio is working on it.  It was created as a direct-to-DVD feature film, but since the rights to the TMNT have been sold to Nickelodeon, there are issues that need to be tied up.

I don’t want to spoil all of the fun for anyone that grew up watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons, but let’s just say, there are cameos galore.  Keep your eyes peeled for many of the characters from the older cartoons to appear in different scenes, sometimes in the foreground or background for a few seconds.

The writing is very good, as is the directing.  Just when you thought it couldn’t get any cooler, they bring in some very unexpected characters, and the whole thing gets more exciting.  I know that is very vague, but I suspect that, if you’re a Turtles fan, the prospect of the team up has already caught your interest.  If you’re not, nothing I say will convince you otherwise.

The one downside is the voices of the ’88 Turtles.  They didn’t get the original cast members back, and I wish that I knew why.  If you know, please comment.  The voices are pretty close, though, overall… though Leonardo’s is very drastically different.

I can’t wait to own this on Blu-ray (if possible).  If not, then DVD will suffice.

This edition is from a different DVD studio called Shout! Factory. And they’ve pulled out all of the stops on this release. Not only that, but one of the features that they list for the set makes it well worth the upgrade if you’ve already got it: Restored to the original broadcast versions with a new stereo soundtrack created from the original audio.

I immediately was a fan of the Jetsons from that point on. Growing up, this has become something of a guilty pleasure, but it’s definitely classic.

Featuring 80s pop star Tiffany in the role of Judy Jetson, my hope is that, now that a DVD is being released, the soundtrack will be re-issued. It’s got some classic songs, including a Jetsons Rap.

Jetsons the Movie is an epic adventure that brings the future family out of their home on earth as George Jetson is promoted by his boss, Spacely Sprocket, to become the new Vice President in charge of Spacely Sprocket’s Orbiting Ore Asteroid.

The promotion happens just as Elroy leads his Spaceball (future basketball) team to victory, and Judy gets a date with future rock legend Cosmic Cosmo. Jane is also ramping up her recycling project.

The family is forced to pack everything up and leave the very next day, and they fly through space, and after a short flight, they arrive at the asteroid. From the outside, you can see the plant where George will work, a shopping mall, and their new home, which is part of Intergalactic Garden Estates.

Needless to say, it’s the start of a grand adventure in a place that I always wanted to be able to live and explore. That’s part of the reason I watched the movie so much once I got it on video. It captured my imagination, and I hoped for a sequel, in which they Jetsons returned to the asteroid, so that I could see more locations on it, and spend more time out in space at the facilities there.

Maybe someday…

The Real Ghostbusters was a cartoon that I would never miss, and when it changed to “Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters,” even at a young age I noticed the animation quality wasn’t quite the same. Slimer was a popular character that made the company believe that creating a show based on Slimer was the way to go. One thing that they failed to understand was that Slimer was loved as part of the supporting cast of Ghostbusters. On his own, the heart was sort of missing. It would be sort of like taking an ensemble cast like that of The Office, and and pulling one character out for a show that isn’t at all like The Office. It’s the full cast that makes the individual characters succeed.

I digress. For years I have been anxiously awaiting any sort of release for The Real Ghostbusters on DVD. The most I expected was to get some episodes on a DVD or a best of The Real Ghostbusters DVD. They put a few episodes on the movie DVD’s second editions, and released three DVDs of episodes a couple of years ago as well.

Then it happened. They announced that more episodes of The Real Ghostbusters were coming to DVD. How much more? Everything. All of the episodes from The Real Ghostbusters and Slimer! and the Real Ghostbusters in one amazing 25 disc set. There will be over 12 hours of bonus material to boot!

I’ve decided to start writing about entertainment.

I will inject a few personal things from time to time. Perhaps some religion, perhaps some politics, but for the most part it’ll be all video games, movies, tv, DVD and the like.

I’ve been wanting a place like this to have as an outlet for writing about my interests for some time now, and I’m looking forward to sharing that with people in the months to come. A lot of things have happened in the last year or so, and I’m hoping to write about some stories that have, perhaps, been written about to death, but simply because I am interested in those topics.

I just got the Passion of the Christ on DVD a couple of days ago. I have not yet had the energy to watch it. Having seen it twice in the theatre, it is definitely a masterpiece in filmmaking. It’s full of heart and soul, and definitely the greatest film of The Passion of Our Lord that has ever been created. Crafted with love and care, tenderness and prayer, it takes you on a very real and very brutal journey though the last 12 hours of the life of Christ. But who doesn’t know that?

What really irritates me, is those people that are afraid to watch it. It’s not going to kill you to see this movie. If anything, it’ll help mold you into a better Christian, and really, who doesn’t need to improve in that area. We all have struggles, we all have hurts, we all have pains, this film says “I love you, and I want to help to take away your pain, or to help you to understand it better.”

You guys, Jesus knows our hurts, our pains, our struggles. He knows when we are happy, when we are sad, and He weeps with us. He carried our burdens and took so much just for us. The film doesn’t even do the true crucifixion justice.

Is the movie gory? Have you seen Kill Bill volume One? From what I’ve heard, that is much worse. For those that have seen the film, it’s definitely not as gory as the media made it sound like. It cuts away from the scourging to show the audience reaction, and the reactions of Mary, the Mother of God, as she can only watch her Son as He is tortured, and that becomes too much for her to bear. However, she remains near by through it all.

This movie has gotten the same reaction that Jesus got when He walked the earth. The movie was slammed and criticised as being overzealous. It is REVOLUTIONARY, it threatened too many people’s way of life. People that weren’t ready to give up their sinfull ways. These people reacted in manners of self-defense. They didn’t know how to take it. Perhaps they were never taught. Perhaps they glimpsed something that they never thought was possible, and still don’t.

All I know, is that there is the influence of God on this film. Watching it, you really get a sense for the emotion that God must have been going through.

It’s really impressive that the whole thing is improved.

The Shawshank Redemption should be available on DVD this year, but hasn’t been announced yet, as far as I know. Sure, I own it on DVD already, but I’m talking about the 10 year anniversary edition, featuring a ton of special features and an audio commentary with the Writer/Director Frank Darabont. As this is one of my favorite movies, I’ll be purchasing this edition as soon as it’s available.

As far as DVDs go, this is a great year for DVD:

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – The theatrical cut, clocking in at 3 hours and 17 minutes, was the best movie released in 2003. Period. This was an incredible adventure with an ending that destroys the endings of all movies that I’ve seen previous to this.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – Special Extended DVD Edition – At 4 hours 10 minutes, this should make Return of the King the best in the trilogy, as well as give it more of an emotional oomph.

The Shawshank Redemption – Special Edition – One of the best movies ever made. Get it when it comes out.

The Star Wars Trilogy – Finally.

The Matrix Revolutions - The most misunderstood movie of 2003. Brilliant.

Big Fish – The most understated film of 2003, one of my favorites.

The Iron Giant – Special Edition – The best animated film that nobody knows about. It’s brilliant. It was undermarketted, severely, but everyone that watches it, loves it.

The Passion of the Christ – The best film of 2004, worth owning to watch once or twice a year and for retreats.

So there you have it. My list of the best DVDs for 2004, as of this moment.
