When I first heard the song “Fireflies,” I thought it was Relient K, who I consider one of my favorite bands of all time.  It turns out that I wasn’t far off of the mark.  Not only was Relient K frontman and song-writer Matthew Thiessen a co-writer on both “The Bird and The Worm” and “Tidal Wave,” but he also provides vocals to “Cave In,” “The Bird and The Worm,” “Tidal Wave” and “Fireflies!”  Somehow I knew that Relient K had something to do with it.

I’m looking forward to hearing more Owl City, now, as he seems to be very talented.  I just hope that his being ranked #1 for a song doesn’t make him into a one-hit-wonder.  I think, though, that if he sticks to his guns and doesn’t let it all go to his head, he could have a long and fruitful career in front of him.

Sometimes, when an artist gets this big, this fast, they are stuck in a box that they created, and are unable to change, or experiment with their music too much.  Matt Thiessen had about four albums before Relient K was finally discovered by a mainstream record label.  And those four albums were nothing short of brilliant.  They had already proven, with each album, that they could do many styles of music, but all sounding like Relient K.

When people hear new music by Owl City, they’re going to want more of the same, while also wanting different stuff.  I think he’ll be able to overcome the rut by continuing to be creative in both lyrics and music, instead of succumbing to pressure and releasing the same song with different lyrics, like Nickelback.

The Journey to God and finding His Will for your life begins with you. I recently heard something that I feel can help you find out where God wants you to be. What are your talents, your gifts that God has graced you with? List all of those. Then ask yourself what you love to do, what is it that brings you joy, like pure, absolute joy. The kind of fun that you know God is showing you and blessing you with. Write those down. Now take a look at that list, and write down all of the things that you could do to acheive a melody of both. The music that the talents and joys will bring is magnificent indeed, as it becomes clearer and the harmony mixes together and molds itself in layers that, when separate, were played very beautifully, almost like you don’t want to hear them mixed with another sound. But when they are mingled together, they create something so beautiful and profound that you cannot stop listening. Then you go in that direction.

Just set aside five minutes every day at the exact same time. Say, right when you wake up, no matter what, the first thing you do is look at the clock or set an alarm of some type, for 5 minutes. Pick up your Bible, and open it up and read it. Meditate on it. Perhaps use this site: http://www.presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp
You can pick up the “One Bread, One Body” books at most Churches. They are meditations on the daily readings. The more you do this, the more clearly you’ll be able to hear God’s voice calling you. It may not be like Moses’ Burning Bush, but God still talks to people like that. The trick is to listen. He won’t put you where you’ll be unhappy. That’s what faith is. And that’s why faith is so beautiful.
