When it comes to the costume of the character, however, there has been a lot of discussion in the last few weeks. The image that I posted at the top of this story is cover art from an upcoming issue of the Wonder Woman comic, #609, which is releasing in June 2011. Apparently the new costume with the pants, shirt and jacket wasn’t meant to last very long. In fact, it seems as though it might have been in an alternate universe. This is a shame, to me, as you can see that she’s now back to her immodest look.
Since the image came out, they’ve altered the costume in time for filming on the pilot, which started this week in Los Angeles. I have a feeling that DC comics might have clued them in on the fact that Diana’s costume wasn’t going to stay that way much longer, and months before the series would start, she’d be back to her usual self. So the costume designers left the jacket out, kept the iconic top that people recognize pretty instantly, as well as the gauntlets. I noticed that they created darker pants, which is good, but I would have preferred them to be nearly black in color, like the comic version. I would have also appreciated if they added a jacket to the costume, to further match the comic, which seems very limited now. They also added stars to the pants, though, to bring it closer to the costume as it will again appear in the comics.
It’s more of an amalgam of the old and the new. Since they aren’t keeping the new look in the comics much longer, I kind of wish they had at least done with the tv series is doing with the costume. It’s kind of a shame that it’s going to be back to business as usual.
