One of my all time favorite groups of characters are The Muppets. I’m a very big fan of the characters. When I was younger, I would watch The Muppet Show every morning on Nickelodeon during the summer. During the Christmas season, I watch The Muppet Christmas Carol a lot, along with The Muppet Family Christmas and Letters to Santa: A Muppets Christmas. (Too bad their It’s a Wonderful Life riff “It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie” wasn’t any good.)
Muppets from Space became a favorite of mine, only to be topped by 2011’s The Muppets, and it’s sequel Muppets Most Wanted. I am such a fan of those two films that I would love to see a Muppets 3 to close out this trilogy. I don’t think the odds are very good for that happening, at least not in the very near future.
When I heard they were making a new Muppet show for ABC, I was excited. Would this be a new variety show like The Muppet Show and Muppets Tonight? Sort of… it was kind of like a weird mix of NBC’s The Office and The Muppet Show, and not near as good as either of those shows. It had some oddly adult humor (which is part of the history of the Muppets, but some of it seemed WAY out of place here). It was called The Muppets, which was unfortunate, because the 2011 movie of the same name was superior in every way. Every. Way.
That said, two things are happening right now, both of which I’m very excited for:
- Muppet Babies is coming back, launching in March on Disney Junior. I’ll be able to share that with my daughter.
- The Muppets will have a new show on the still untitled Disney streaming service. Having Star Wars content was enough to make be interested in checking out the service. Bringing Muppets to it has made it that much sweeter.
Not much is known about the Disney Streaming Service (DSS) Muppet show. According to The Hollywood Reporter same article, the search for a writer for the new show is underway. (The mentioned that a reboot of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids could also be on the table, possibly for the DSS as well.)
